Ike boys, GP South girls have top team records

@GPohly on TwitterGabe Garbarino’s investment is beginning to pay off.
The Utica senior, who ran about 500 miles this summer to prepare for the cross country season, gave another indication Tuesday that he’s poised for a big year by winning the boys race at the Macomb Area Conference Red Division jamboree at Stony Creek Eastwood Beach.
Garbarino finished in 16 minutes, 18 seconds as he won for the third time in as many meets this season.
“I’m very happy with that time,” Garbarino said. “Today was a good day.”
Eisenhower had the top boys team finish, going 7-0 in Red Division dual meets on the 3.1-mile course.
Karenna Duffey of L’Anse Creuse North finished first in the girls race in 19:34, and Grosse Pointe South went 7-0 in dual meets as the Blue Devils took what they hope will be a step toward a 38th consecutive state-finals appearance.
Garbarino, who finished 18 seconds ahead of runner-up Chase Fedolak of Dakota, practiced like a team leader in the off-season, Utica coach Megan Berry said.
“He does everything you hope your top athlete would do,” Berry said. “He has transitioned into a really good leader.
“He’s always stretching, taking an ice bath, doing all those little detail things when he’s not at practice that you need to do to go to the top level.”
While happy with his time, Garbarino told Berry he hoped for a stronger showing by Utica in the team scoring after the Chieftains had only one additional runner in the top 20 and went 3-4 in dual meets.
“He said, ‘I care that I won, but I care more about how our team did,’” Berry said. “That shows how good a leader he is, and that he cares about what’s going on behind him in the race.”
Fedolak ran with Garbarino for the first mile of the race.
“I was running my race,” the Dakota senior said. “I was hoping he would slow down, but he kept going the whole time. He’s a great runner.
“It’s always nice to race against him. He pushes me to be better.”
Dakota’s fifth and final scorer finished ahead of Eisenhower’s fifth, but the Eagles bunched four runners in places 4 through 9 for an edge over the Cougars.
“This lets us see where we’re at, and what we need to improve on,” Fedolak said.
Brennan Brothers led Eisenhower. The senior was fourth overall in 16:48.
Logan Hefferan, Zac Truman, Brian Jones and John Burke completed the Eagles’ scoring with times ranging from 16:52 to 17:35.
“I was most pleased about how we stayed together as a pack, as a team,” Brothers said. “Today was really important. It’s been a long time since our team won a MAC Red (jamboree). I’m really proud that we did today.”
Jones and Burke are sophomores. Hefferan is a senior, and Truman is in the 11th grade.
“We hoped to win,” Jones said. “We were cautiously optimistic. We knew Dakota and Romeo, especially, would be difficult competition. We prepared, and we achieved our goal.
“We’ve been training hard since before school let out in June. We’ve put in the miles. We got up to running 50, 55 miles a week. We were doing speed days, workouts, all of that, all summer long, every day.”
Grosse Pointe South bunched six runners in the top 16 to go undefeated in the girls dual meets.
Senior Reanna Raymond, who was fifth overall in 20:31, paced the Blue Devils. Abbey Guevara, Emily Dodge, Marie High and Kaleigh McCarron completed the scoring for Grosse Pointe South with times ranging from 20:57 to 21:33.
“We don’t have the outstanding front-runners this year, but we’ve got 10, 12 girls that are packed pretty solid,” Blue Devils coach Steve Zaranek said. “We were ahead of many teams’ third runners with our seventh and eighth.
“We have a long way to go, but this is a really good start. Our success is going to be based on how much of a pack we can put together.”
Atop the Blue Devils’ list of goals, Zaranek said, is qualifying for the Nov. 5 state finals through regional competition that will be a week earlier.
“We want to be on the starting line (at the finals),” the coach said. “That’s definitely an objective. We want to be there in the thick of it.
“This is a stepping stone. We can build on it.”
Duffey had a seven-second advantage over runner-up Hannah Faustyn, who helped Dakota go 4-3 in dual meets.
“It was a good learning experience,” Faustyn said of the race. “I need to work on making the last half of my races stronger. I didn’t achieve that today.
“I’ve got to up my mental game. I think you can run faster if you put your mind to it. If I stop telling myself that I’m tired, I’ll be able to run my second half faster.”
Grosse Pointe North was 6-1 in dual meets and Romeo was 5-2.
The second and final Red jamboree will be Oct. 4 at Delia Park.
