It’s been said how important it is to finish strong.
For Dakota’s boys cross country team, it’s the opposite.
The Cougars started off the 2014 season by coming in first place at the Mustang Early Bird Race at Lutheran North.
Senior Ian Demrose took first overall in the boys’ race with a time of 16:52 which is just one second off his personal best. Last year at the Early Bird he ran an 18:10.
Dakota coach Mike Timpa commented on Demrose saying “he’s an aggressive runner, he goes hard in practice, he’s someone who’s not afraid to take the lead in a race. He’s a good leader and a good team player.”
The Cougars had six of the top ten runners in the race including Nick Brooks who took third overall at 17:26. Brendan Koch came in fifth with a time of 18:02.
Taking second place was Ford with 71 points. Despite having no runners place in the top ten, the Falcons were led by Luke Powers who ran a 18:20.
Lutheran North came in third overall with 81 points followed by Chippewa Valley which had 84 points. L’Anse Creuse rounded out the field with 118.
Lutheran North coach Steve Slagel said “we were missing our top runner today and Danny Weglarz filled in nicely for us.” Weglarz came in fourth overall running a 17:57. “Danny knew he was going to be number one today and responded by breaking 18.”
Slagel also said “we had nine personal best including two on the varsity level.”
Over in the girls’ race, Lutheran North senior Gina Patterson came in first with a time of 19:04. It was her best time of this season, and was 48 seconds faster than last year on the same course.
Dakota took second in the girls’ race with 47 points. Ford followed with 63, Chippewa Valley had 130 and L’Anse Creuse rounded it out with 136 points.
