Runner achieves all-state for third time
By George Pohly

BROOKLYN, Mich. >> Karenna Duffey had a sport drink in her left hand and a wince on her face.
“I’m in a lot of pain,” the L’Anse Creuse North junior.
So it went Saturday for the Macomb County champion who achieved all-state status for the third time in as many appearances at the Lower Peninsula state Division 1 girls cross country championship meet at Michigan International Speedway.
“She had a great day, she ran a smart race,” L’Anse Creuse North coach Jason Hubbard said after Duffey posted a time of 18 minutes, .1 seconds and finished in third place.
“Karenna was able to move (down the stretch) and catch some girls who weren’t able to hang on,” Hubbard said. “It was a great race.”
Senior Maggie Farrell of Battle Creek Lakeview was the winner on the 3.1-mile course that began on the MIS infield and crossed the auto racing track twice before ending on the infield near where car races start and finish.
Farrell finished in 17:25.6 and runner-up Anne Forsyth, a junior from Ann Arbor Pioneer, took third in 17:35.
“I really wanted to win,” Duffey said. “Hopefully I can win next year.”
Farrell and Forsyth established themselves as co-favorites after the Spartan Invitational at Michigan State University in mid-September, Hubbard said.
“We figured there were seven kids who had a chance to win, with Maggie Farrell and Anne Forsyth being the top two,” Hubbard said.
“If they had had an off day, it could have been someone else. But Maggie ran great; she took off and didn’t seem affected by anything.
“Forsyth ran a great race, too. They ran too good today.”
Duffey finished third in the state final as a ninth-grader, and she took 14th in 2015 despite a leg injury.
With dominant performances this fall at the Macomb County, Macomb Area Conference and regional meets, Duffey proved to be the premier runner in her area, a development she thought might have hurt her chances of winning the state title.
“If I had had one or two races this year where I would have had to fight, then maybe I would have had a real good chance of winning today.
“It’s just so different at the state meet.”
Duffey’s third-place finish was the best by any county girl or boy in any division.
She was the lone county girl to achieve all-state status, which is awarded to the top 30 runners in each race in each division.
County champion Romeo finished 26th in the team standings.
Hannah Toner, Madelyn Malczewski, Julia Knepper, Barret Schettler and Sydney Goodrich scored for the Bulldogs, whose roster included Charlene Yarema and Dianna Westrick.
Senior Marisa Papadelis of Stevenson finished 180th and 10th-grader Hannah Faustyn of Dakota took 182nd.
Highland Milford won the Division 1 team championship with 150 points. Runner-up Ann Arbor Pioneer had 172.
Mallory Barrett, who finished ninth, led Milford.
Otsego won the Division 2 championship with 48 points, 139 fewer than second-place East Grand Rapids. Megan Aalberts, who finished sixth, led Otsego.
Kayla Windemuller of Holland Christian was the individual champion. The junior’s time was 18:06.4.
Regina finished 21st. Erin Golden, Betsy Lueck, Megan Stief, Jasmine Browning and Michelle Ignatowski scored for the Saddlelites, whose roster included Samantha Arnone and Gabby Louwers.
Freshmen Alaina Carroll of Armada and Amanda Wood of Lutheran North finished 89th and 165th, respectively.
Traverse City St. Francis scored 77 points and repeated as the Division 3 champion. Joyana Tarsa, who was seventh, led St. Francis in 19:13.6.
Adelyn Ackley of Hart was the Division 3 individual champion. The sophomore’s time was 17:40.6.
Senior Ava Strenge of Battle Creek St. Philip won her second state championship when she crossed the finish line first in Division 4. Her time was 18:27.2.
Ninth-grader Allison Greenwood of Parkway Christian finished 87th in 21:50.3.
Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart won the Division 4 team championship with 34 points. Sisters Bailley McConnell, Alexis McConnell, Cammie McConnell and Lauren McConnell finished in the top nine for the Irish.
