Dakota, Lutheran North advance as teams
By George Pohly

Gabe Garbarino crossed the finish line, took a few more strides and then collapsed in a heap on the wet grass.
He’d had a good day.
“It hurts, but it feels so good; it’s worth it,” the Utica senior after he earned a berth in the state Lower Peninsula cross country finals by finishing sixth at the Division 1 regional meet at Anchor Bay on Saturday.
Garbarino finished a partly muddy 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes, 28 seconds.
As one of the top 15 runners in the race, he qualified for the finals that will be Nov. 5 at Michigan International Speedway.
“I knew it would be a fight,” said Garbarino, who finished 17 seconds ahead of the 16th-place runner. “I kept pushing.
“I’m happy.”
Garbarino was one of six Macomb County individuals who qualified from the Division 1 race.
Dakota advanced as a team.
The top three teams moved on, and the Cougars finished third behind Clarkston, which had 82 points, and Lake Orion, which scored 90.
Lutheran North also advanced at Anchor Bay, the site of regionals for Divisions 1, 2 and 3.
The Mustangs, led by Peter Freeman, finished third in Division 2.
St. Clair, with individual champion Brendan Parr, who finished in 16:21, leading the charge, won the Division 2 team championship with 21 points. Second-place Croswell-Lexington had 55 and the Mustangs 91.
Freeman finished fifth in 17:00. He started the race hoping to break the Lutheran North record of 16:13 after having run a 16:18 the last time he competed at Anchor Bay.
But a course that took a lot of rain in recent days wasn’t giving up fast times.
“It was wet and there was some mud,” Freeman said. “It kind of slowed us down.”
Nonetheless, the Mustangs will be on the starting line as a unit at MIS.
“I’m proud of our team,” Freeman said.
William Martin, who was 15th, also scored for Lutheran North along with Daniel Knapp, Aaron Wood and Noah Starkey.
Noah Verlinde of Armada qualified for the Division 2 state finals by finishing 14th. His time was 17:49.
In Division 3, Aidan Francis of Memphis earned a second consecutive finals berth. The junior finished 14th in18:48.
“This feels very good,” Francis said. “I’ve been waiting for my times to come down.
“I had to prove to myself that I could still do it.”
Brandon Hughes of Sandusky was the individual champion in 17:32.
Almont was the team champion with 37 points. Bishop Foley took second and 83 and Sandusky third with 119.
Dakota’s five scorers were led by Mitchell MacDonald, who was 10th in 16:33. Zachary MacDonald, Joshua Jaster, Thomas Szymanski and Sawyer Kisha also scored for the Cougars, the MAC Red meet champions.
“We ran pretty well,” Zachary MacDonald said. “We would have liked to get first, but qualifying was all that mattered. We all did our part.
“It was a good day.”
Dakota did not qualify for the finals in 2015.
“It’s kind of upsetting that we didn’t win, but we got (to the finals),” Mitchell MacDonald said. “This is what we’ve been training for, to go to states.”
Matt Schram of Rochester Adams was the Division 1 regional champ. The senior finished in 15:49, the fastest time of the day in any division.
Jack Wilson, the county champion, was an individual state qualifier. He finished fourth in 16:15. Dylan Hanson of Ford was seventh in 16:29; Zac Truman, Eisenhower, 11th, 16:34; Brennan Brothers, Eisenhower, 12th, 16:35, and Jacob Schaldenbrand, L'Anse Creuse North, 15th, 16:41.
The boys Division 4 championship race begins next Saturday at 10 a.m.; Division 3 at 10:30; Division 2 at 1:30 p.m., and Division 1 at 2.

This is the week, the reason why they log mile after mile in the summer and train diligently as the cross country season unfolds.
Regional meets, where qualifiers for state finals are determined, will be Friday and Saturday, and runners from Macomb County and beyond want to be at their best.
“We’ve got our minds set on the regional race,” Dakota senior Chase Fedolak said. “That’s our main goal.”
Most county runners will compete at either Lake St. Clair Metropark on Friday or Anchor Bay on Saturday.
