Leading the JV race was Josh VanSlambrouck, Matt Jesue, Colin Swanson and Adam Frost, who finished 2-5, securing the victory for the JV team. Josh and Colin were named our athletes of the meet due to their performances.
When asked about his race Colin Swanson had this to say. "I thought for the first two miles I could win, then I past VanSlam, then Frost. In the last mile I caught up to Jesue. I got outkicked by Romeo and the guys, but I was glad I finished 4th." Overall we had 4 guys set personal best times on the challenging course. Marko Tegeltija can attest to the dangers of running in the forest. Several athletes recorded top time for this new course (2014) Chase at #2, Brendan at #8, Mitch at #9, Jimmy at #11 and Zack MacDonald at #15

At the same time it gave me the motivation to power and sprint past the finish line." First MAC Red Jamboree held Tuesday

The blueprint got a little smudged.
Karenna Duffey, a L’Anse Creuse North sophomore, was supposed to approach Tuesday’s MAC Red Jamboree at Riverbends Park like a workout.
Do the 3.1 miles at a brisk pace, but do not get caught up in the moment. After all, it’s early in the season and there is lots of running ahead.
What is it they say about best laid plans?
“Emma (Wilson) was passing in the first quarter mile,” said Duffey.
Wilson is a superlative runner from Romeo.
The plan was for Duffey to cover the first mile in about 6:05. Instead, she ran about 5:50. Still, at the conclusion of two miles, Wilson was about 18 seconds ahead of Duffey.
Duffey, who finished third at the 2014 Division 1 state meet at MIS, put the pedal down. She just managed to get past Wilson steps before the finish line.
Duffey finished in 18:40.0. Wilson was just one second behind, crossing the line in 18:41.0. Third place Kayla Dobies of Dakota run a 19:22.0.
“I’m a little sore now,” Duffey said, smiling. “Not as sore as I was at the state meet, though. It was cold that day.”
While Duffey took individual honors at the jamboree, it was Grosse Pointe South won the team competition with 48 points. Eisenhower came in second with 72, Dakota was third with 90, Stevenson tallied 96, Romeo 98,Grosse Pointe North 138 and Utica 140.
Even though Wilson got edged out, teammate Adam Fraeyman topped all runners in the boys race. Fraeyman finished in 16:28.0. Second-place Connor Sickmiller of Grosse Pointe North was timed in 16:51.0.
The Dakota Cougars won the team championship with 65 points. Romeo had 68, Grosse Pointe North 70, Utica 83, Eisenhower 122, L’Anse Creuse North 158, Grosse Pointe South 167 and Stevenson 215.
“Coach told me there would be good competition today and there was,” said Fraeyman. “He also said go out and win it.”
So the Bulldogs’ senior was just following coach Mike Buslepp’s orders. Nobody has to order Fraeyman to run. He has been doing it since he was a fifth grader at Trinity Lutheran School in Utica.
“There were two fifth grade teachers at Trinity. One coached soccer and the other coached cross country. My dad made sure I was in the cross country coach’s class,” said Fraeyman, smiling.
It was David Heck, that fifth grade teacher, who got Fraeyman interested in distance running.
It was a heckuva day Tuesday for Fraeyman.
He will be with the Romeo Bulldogs when they compete in the Spartan Invitational on the Forest Akers East Golf Course Friday. That meet annually features some of the top runners in the state.
“This race was a good way to get ready for the Spartan Invite,” said Fraeyman.
