The names and faces were the same, but it was a different Dakota boys cross country that competed in the second Macomb Area Conference Red Division jamboree.
The Cougars, who finished second to Romeo in the first jamboree, took first place in Tuesday's meet at River Bends Park in Shelby Township with a 7-0 record.
"We have some kids who are new to cross country and as opposed to being two or three races in, they're now seven or eight races in," said coach Mike Timpa. "They're getting more confidence and getting in more work, in general. They're understanding the sport.
"We had a good race at Holly last weekend and lots of times in cross country, confidence is the biggest factor. You're out there 15, 16, 17 minutes and there's the tendency to second-guess the training and things like that. When they run well they see their hard work pay off and (Saturday's performance) kind of led into today."
In the girls meet, Stevenson completed a sweep of the two jamborees, defeating all seven division opponents.
Romeo's Jacob Domagalski took first place by a nine-second margin over runner-up Thomas Michno of L'Anse Creuse North. Ian Demrose of Dakota was fourth overall behind Romeo's Adam Fraeyman. The difference was a pack of four Cougars -- Chase Fedolak, Daniel Knapp, James Hoefler and Brendan Koch -- who finished ahead of the Bulldogs' third runner.
"We knew that Domagalski was going to be up there and Fraeyman was going to be up there so our goal was to pack our guys in ahead of their number three," Timpa said. "That was an attainable goal and they executed it perfectly.
"We're just trying to stay healthy. I know Romeo has a few kids who are sick and that might have been a factor but we're just trying to stay positive with our training and with what we can accomplish throughout the year. The nice thing for us is we've had some different kids step up. Danny Knapp ran a season-best time. He was our sixth guy on Saturday and today he was our third. We have interchangeable parts and the kids are good with that."
The River Bends course narrows to a single lane heading into a wooded area around the second mile. A runner can't afford to fall too far behind at that point. Domagalski was aware of that.
"Today I wanted to be up front going into the woods and then just hang there with the lead guy and once we got out of the woods just go with whatever I had left," he said.
The last week in September and the first week of October are the toughest ones of the season for most runners and Romeo's are no exception.
"We're into the toughest work of the year and now we'll start cutting it down a little bit so we're running well at the end of the season," Domagalski said.
Domagalski's winning time was 16:17.
"Everyone wants to be faster, but I guess I'm OK with where I am now," he said.
While Timpa is trying to build confidence in his squad, Stevenson girls coach Kevin Hanson made sure that the Titans wouldn't get over-confident by putting together a tough first month's schedule.
"This is the first time we've run on a course that is fast," Hanson said. "We intentionally spend September running on more difficult courses so the kids are not over-confident. It's scary how fast some of the courses are now. Kids get artificial blown-up times and think they're someplace that they're not.
"We didn't have a kid who isn't pleased with the way she ran today. We talk about September being the month to learn things and make mistakes and October being championship time. I think we're ready to go into championship time."
Stevenson was led by Samantha Hanson, who finished second to L'Anse Creuse North freshman Karenna Duffey. Duffey's winning time was 18:14, six seconds ahead of Hanson. The Titans' Allison Shannon was fourth, Ashlie Baumann was seventh and Jenna Anderson and Alex Huey were 16th and 17th, respectively.
"I just tried to stay at a pace I knew I could manage and then I made my way to the front," Duffey said.
LCN coach Jason Hubbard said that Duffey is the best freshman girl he has coached.
"She's talented. She works hard. She's super-competitive," he said. "She's running a lot smarter. She started the season going out too fast and she paid for it, but lately she's been a lot more patient and letting the race come to her.
"She's very coachable. She listens. And having the two Sammies (Stevenson's Hanson and Eisenhower's Samantha Allmacher) right in front of her all season has definitely helped her. They're tough, competitive girls who are never going to let up. You couldn't find two better role models than those girls.
"I told her she can learn more by watching them, listening to them and talking to them than anything anybody else can tell her. And they're both happy to help her."
