Cougars back up county championship with top Red Division finish
By George Pohly

Lakeview got what it was after at the Macomb Area Conference boys division cross country meet.
Evan Tonn was the first Husky to the finish line Saturday as the St. Clair Shores school captured the Blue Division championship on a day when Fraser’s Steven Stine and Dakota added to their accomplishments.
Stine was the overall individual winner as he paced all Blue runners to the finish line, and Dakota added the Red Division championship to its laurels a week after the Cougars won the Macomb County championship.
Stine finished the flat Lake St. Clair Metropark course in 15 minutes, 55 seconds in cold and windy conditions, the first time the senior has broken 16 minutes this season.
“I was very happy,” Stine, the Macomb County runner-up and two-time Blue jamboree winner, said.
Stine and teammate Jalen Smith, who finished fifth in 16:13, gave the Ramblers a strong presence up front in the final meet before teams head for regional competition next weekend.
“We were looking to get a good time, but we’ve got regionals Friday,” Stine said. “We wanted to run a smooth race and see where it took us.
“We were looking to go out with the lead pack and then make our move a half-mile into the race. It worked out.”
Fraser will be in the Division 1 regional at Lake St. Clair Metropark a day before Dakota jumps into the Division 1 regional at Anchor Bay.
The Cougars, who were led by senior Chase Fedolak, who finished second to Stine in 16:02, scored 37 points to win the Red Division race. The Cougars and Eisenhower were dual-meet co-champions.
Mitchell MacDonald, Joshua Jaster, Zachary MacDonald and Thomas Szymanski also scored for the Cougars, who didn’t shy away from the competition despite the effort it took to win the county crown and the energy they’ll need a week from now to qualify for the state finals.
“We’re always going to go out there competing for first place; that’s how we are,” Fedolak said. “It’s great to win this kind of meet, but, yes, our minds are on regionals. That’s our main goal.”
Each of the five runners who scored for Dakota is a senior.
“Watching my teammates grow is a great feeling,” Fedolak said. “We wouldn’t be winning all these meets if it wasn’t for them.
“It’s all seven of us, and the JV guys, too. They’re a vital part of our team.”
David Walker, a junior, and senior Sawyer Kisha also ran for Dakota in the varsity race.
Lakeview backed up its Blue dual-meet championship with a fifth consecutive first-place finish at the division meet.
Tonn was third to Stine and Smith on the Blue individual chart. Alex Tonn, Brendan Parzynski, Nathan Myers and Tom Walby also scored for the Huskies, who had 45 points.
“It means the whole world to me to win this meet,” Alex Tonn said. “Our team has been working hard all season, working all summer. Everyone’s very dedicated.
“I’m very satisfied.”
Dual-meet champion St. Clair won the White Division meet. Brendan Parr was the first Saint to score. The junior finished in 16:15.
Ford 11th-grader Dylan Hanson, whose time was 16:10, was the White individual champion.
The top five Red runners were Fedolak, Mike Ciaravino of Grosse Pointe North, Gabe Garbarino of Utica, Mitchell MacDonald and Logan Hefferan of Eisenhower.
Following Hanson to the finish line from the White were Parr, Michael Zedan of Anchor Bay, Josh Williams of St. Clair and Jake Redlawski of St. Clair.
In the Blue, Austin Chambe of Lake Shore was fourth and Alex Tonn fifth.

Dakota, Romeo prepare for ‘brutal’ regional
By George Pohly
@MIPrepZoneMD
Dakota is on a mission this boys cross country season.
Whether that mission includes conquering the MAC Red Division meet Saturday remains to be seen.
The Cougars won the Macomb County meet last weekend, and they have prepared all season to give a regional performance that will propel them to the state finals.
So with the Red Division meet sandwiched between the county championships and what figures to be a rugged regional meet at Anchor Bay on Oct. 29, the Cougars took a wait-and-see attitude toward the division meet that will be this Saturday at Lake St. Clair Metropark.
“When you’re in a position to win, it’s tough to completely blow it off,” Dakota coach Mike Timpa said in reference to the division race. “It obviously has some importance to the guys. We’re going to see how we’re doing during this week of training.
“Whether we run our top seven guys or sit a couple is a decision we have to make as it gets closer.”
Coaches wrestle every year with training strategy and importance placed on meets in the stretch drive of the season.
For the better county teams and individuals, it’s necessary to prioritize county, league, regional and state meets, because those events are run on four consecutive Saturdays.
“The way our schedule is set up,” Timpa said, “it’s tough to put value on county, your MAC and your regional and still expect, if you do make it out of the regional, to run well a week later at states.”
Romeo is in a situation similar to Dakota.
The Bulldogs finished second at the county meet with no seniors among their five scorers that included individual champion Jack Wilson, a freshman.
Coach Mike Buslepp wasn’t certain how Romeo would approach the Red meet.
“We want to run well at conference, but our real goal is in two weeks,” Buslepp said, referring to the Division 1 regional meet at Anchor Bay that will include Dakota.
Romeo and Dakota will be in the same regional field as Clarkston, Lake Orion, Rochester, Rochester Adams and Rochester Hills Stoney Creek.
Clarkston is No. 14 and Lake Orion is honorable mention in the state Division 1 ranking done by MichiganCrossCountry.com.
“It’s brutal over there,” Buslepp said of the Anchor Bay regional. “I feel like any team that gets out will have a shot at top 10 in the state.”
At regional meets, the first-, second- and third-place teams qualify for state championship meets that will be Nov. 5 at Michigan International Speedway.
All three divisions of the MAC will race at Lake St. Clair Metropark.
The Red, White and Blue boys run at 10 a.m., and separate results will be scored for each division. Girls race at 10:45 a.m.
Defending meet champions for boys are Dakota in the Red, St. Clair in the White and Lakeview in the Blue.
Defending girls champions are Grosse Pointe South in the Red, Anchor Bay in the White and Marysville in the Blue.
Dual-meet champions for boys this season were Eisenhower and Dakota in the Red, St. Clair in the White and Lakeview in the Blue.
Girls dual-meet champions were Grosse Pointe South in the Red, St. Clair in the White and Marysville in the Blue.
