Utica’s McFarland, Dakota’s Harberts win county cross country championships
This time, neither a foot injury nor a “punch to the stomach” kept Trent McFarland from his goal, and Jayden Harberts rose to a welcomed challenge to extend her winning streak. Utica’s McFarland and Dakota’s Harberts won individual championships at the annual Macomb County cross country meet at Stony Creek Eastwood Beach on Saturday.
McFarland, who missed the 2021 meet because of a foot injury, finished in 15 minutes, 36.9 seconds and had a 23-second margin over runner-up Thomas Westphal of Anchor Bay.
Harberts surrendered the lead to Romeo’s Madison Clor mid-race, but rallied to win in 18:28.5, three seconds ahead of Clor, for the junior’s third consecutive county championship.
“It’s never been that close since we’ve known each other. It was kind of scary,” Harberts said. “But it was good for both of us.”
Harberts knew she had to make a move with about a quarter-mile left in the 3.1-mile race.
“I wasn’t going to give up the win that easily,” she said. “I knew I had an expectation to meet (as the two-time champion). I’m happy with it.
“It was very windy, but it was perfect — nice and cold. My legs were cold at the start. I was waiting for them to warm up, to really start feeling it. But it was a good day.”
It was the fourth time this season that McFarland and Westphal finished first and second in an invitational setting. McFarland won the first two and Westphal the third at the Shepherd Invitational, a development the Utica senior called a “punch to the stomach.”
“Thomas got me a couple weeks ago, and that was like a punch to the stomach,” McFarland said. “I had beaten him a couple times before, and to see him beat me — it was awesome for him, he’s a great runner, no discredit to him — but I knew today I was going to work with him, sit on him until the last whatever and then make my move.
“That’s what I did. (I made the move) a little earlier than expected, but it still worked.”
Westphal, who’s in the 11th grade, and McFarland separated themselves from the pack early in the race.
“They went out like it was a prize fight,” Anchor Bay coach Jeff Payne said. “Thomas ran about what I expected today. We put in a pretty hard week of work. His legs were a little flat — but that’s not to take away from what Trent did.
“They’re both likely top 10 kids in the state at the end of the season, and Trent got the best of him today. Congrats to him.”
Camden Khon of Armada finished third in 16:16.4. Vincent Guaresimo and Connor Clor of team-champion Romeo finished fourth and fifth, respectively, and the Fraser duo of Justin Roose and Tyler Donovan took 6-7 for the final two berths on the All-Macomb County First Team.
Madison Clor and third-place Emmerson Clor led Romeo to a seventh straight girls county championship.
Brooklyn Khon of Armada finished fourth, Romeo’s Violet Hrabovsky fifth, Utica’s Addison Johnson sixth and Fraser’s Grace Grupido seventh to complete the First Team.
Madison Clor said she “loves” racing against Harberts.
“She makes me work for everything,” the senior said. “I love having someone to go against every race. Racing alone is not fun. I’d rather have competition out there.
“Obviously, you want to win, but at the end of the day if we’re both pushing each other and getting something out of it, that’s what counts. We’re going to be racing against each other for the next three or four weeks. Having that competition now sets me up for the state meet.”
Clor said she took the lead about two miles into the race.
“I wanted to keep the pace going,” Clor said. “She started slowing down, pacing off of me, so I took it over.
“She just had a stronger kick than me,” Clor added with a smile.
The meet was at Eastwood Beach for the first time since 2018.

Macomb is still a red county, and this time there’s a tinge of orange. Romeo’s red-and-white Bulldogs ran to first place finishes in the boys and girls races at the annual Macomb County championship cross country meet at Stony Creek Eastwood Beach on Saturday. It was the sixth straight championship for the boys and seventh for the girls. Utica’s orange-and-black Chieftains finished second, and Dakota and Fraser were third and fourth, respectively, in both races. Vincent Guaresimo finished fourth in 16 minutes, 18.2 seconds and Connor Clor fifth in 16:21 to lead Romeo in the first race of the day. The Bulldogs scored 71 points, seven fewer than Utica. Senior Madison Clor took second to Dakota’s Jayden Harberts to lead Romeo to the meet sweep. Freshman Emmerson Clor finished third, sophomore Violet Hrabovsky fifth and ninth-grader Natalia Guaresimo eighth as the Bulldogs scored 37 points, 40 fewer than the Chieftains, who also finished second last year. Junior Gracie Youngblood, who finished 19th and made all-county (top 21), completed the Bulldogs’ scoring.
“We want to win the county,” Madison Clor said. “A lot of these teams are really good, and to be able to compete with them isn’t easy.
“I know our (girls) team — nobody expected us to be very good this year, so I’m really proud of where we’re at. We’re working together really well, pushing each other to be better. It’s fun to run my sister (Emmerson), too.” The race was Romeo’s first in 20 days. “They ran really, really well, — really, really solid,” coach Mike Buslepp said. “The girls did exactly what they should have done today.” The Bulldogs benefit from Madison Clor’s influence, Buslepp said. “She’s a great kid, has a great personality,” the coach said. “Hard worker. Very reflective. It’s felt throughout the entire team. They want to run tough for each other, and it starts with her. If she shows grit, she shows toughness, shows that she’s not afraid of anything, it’s going to translate to the rest of the team.” Utica’s scorers included all-county runners Addison Johnson, sixth; Siene Muraszewski, 10th, and Meagan Verellen, 12th. Ava Rawley and Abby Fifield completed the scoring for coach Chris Scott’s team. “We did exactly what we wanted to do,” Scott said. “We finished second for the third year in a row to one of the best teams in the state in Romeo, with another very competitive team in Dakota right behind us. We’re happy to be where we are. “We have a great relationship with Romeo. I love what they do, I respect what they do, I admire what they do. It’s definitely a respectful competition.” Derrian Kumfer (15th), Bryce Goodsell (21st) and Michael Magnoli completed the scoring for Romeo’s boys. Utica’s boys team had four all-county runners, including Logan Davis, Harper Wesley and Luke Morehouse. Danny Boyd was the Chieftains’ fifth scorer. “We survived the weekend,” Buslepp said. “Hats off to Utica. They ran really, really well today and kept it close. “We’ve been dealing with some stuff the last couple of weeks. This was a good race to get us prepped (for upcoming meets) and make our guys understand that this is not going to be easy. They’re going to have to fight through some things if they want to accomplish the things they want to accomplish. We’re going to be able to take a lot from today that’s going to help us grow over the next couple of weeks.” Utica finished third last year. “I’m really proud of the team,” Chieftains coach Megan Berry said. “Seventy-eight points is one of our better scores in school history. “The thing that I’ve been impressed with is our depth. We’ve had a lot of kids who have been interchangeable this season. We have a good pack, and they push each other.”
