Gabarino, Fedolakk look forward to keen competition

Gabe Garbarino and Chase Fedolak are jumping in with both feet.
Seniors who finished 1-2 at the MAC Red Division jamboree Tuesday, Utica’s Garbarino and Dakota’s Fedolak will be part of the field Saturday for the annual Holly Invitational, an early season measuring stick for top cross country runners.
Garbarino won the Red jamboree in 16 minutes, 18 seconds at Stony Creek Eastwood Beach.
One of his season goals is to break the Utica 3.1-mile record of 16:11, and he believes meets like Holly will give him opportunities to do just that.
“It’s pretty hilly,” Garbarino said of the course at Springfield Oaks County Park. “But I’m not worried about hills.
“I just want someone to race, and I’ll have that at Holly. That’s why I’m excited.”
Runners and coaches try to strike a balance between training, rest, performance and building toward the key meets that are held in October.
Running a jamboree on Tuesday and a competitive event like the Holly Invitational four days later can be tricky.
“I like our meets a little more spread out,” Utica coach Megan Berry said.
But she expects Garbarino, who finished first in all of Utica’s three meets to date, will test himself against other competitors.
“This will be his first race really buckling down,” Berry said.
Fedolak, whose time at Eastwood Beach was 16:36, said running two meets like the jamboree and Holly is part of a cross country runner’s job description.
“It’s tough, but we train for it, and it gets us tougher,” Fedolak said. “We keep working hard and get it out of the way.
“We just keep doing our best to get better.”
Garbarino and Fedolak were All-Macomb County runners last year, and both logged many miles during the summer to prepare for this fall.
Garbarino’s race-day routine includes praying.
“Before every race, I pray to God, and he helps me through the race,” Garbarino said. “I pray to him during the race.”
Meets at Michigan State University and Stony Creek Metropark will also draw top runners this weekend.
Grosse Pointe South, which went 7-0 in MAC Red girls dual meets at the jamboree, will run in the Autumn Classic at Stony Creek on Saturday.
